Time moves quickly; before you know it, the places you love have vanished or transformed beyond recognition. We’ve been exploring the archives to revive some of our favorite spots and memories, brushing off the cobwebs of the past. Maybe we’re a bit sentimental, but these places are part of who we are and where we come from.
Hulme, Sweet Hulme.
When Al Baker moved to Hulme, Manchester, in the mid-1990s, the iconic crescent-shaped Hulme Crescents were already set for demolition.
Originally designed as a modern post-war replacement for old, grim housing, the blocks quickly fell short of their idealistic vision. But as the original residents left, a unique, vibrant community took root.
Free from suburban conventions, Hulme became the epicentre of Manchester’s creative energy, where young people lived boldly, economically, and on the edge. With a camera tucked under his coat and lenses in a Kwik Save bag, Al Baker captured the raw life of Hulme—its squat parties, impromptu jams, cellar raves, and unforgettable weekends—documenting a remarkable moment in time.
Set against the crumbling landscape of a doomed estate, Al’s photos preserve the spirit, culture, and chaos of Hulme before it was lost to redevelopment.
